CIEH Principles of COSSH

This is a stand-alone qualification complementing the Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification. It is aimed at those responsible for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) at work, introducing candidates to the inherent risks in substances and the controls available. From the definition of substances and their potential effects to responsibilities imposed by COSHH Regulations, the qualification will prepare candidates to look carefully at their own work activities and share the responsibilities with their managers and supervisors.

Who needs this qualification?

Appropriate for all employees who use substances hazardous to health in manufacturing, cleaning, health care, transport, utilities and offices.

Subjects Covered

  • Definition of types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace
  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes
  • COSHH assessments and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the control of substances hazardous to health regulations

Outcomes
On completing this qualification candidates will be able to:

  • Identify the hazards associated with those substances
  • Identify the risks and controls available to deal with the substances
  • Identify what to expect from a COSHH assessment

Successful completion will prepare employees to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in co-operation with their managers and supervisors.

Prerequisite

While this unit of study can be delivered as a stand-alone qualification and there are no specific prerequisites, it is strongly recommended that candidates should already hold the CIEH qualification if Health and Safety in the Workplace, or equivalent.

Duration – half day course, multiple-choice examination.
