The Governors' Inspection Guide
is one of the supporting packages from Central Management Systems to
accompany your risk assessment package.
There is a legal requirement for
governors to carry out safety inspections at a school and give a
report of their findings to the Head Teacher for action or
discussion. Many governors or governing bodies however are a
little uncertain about exactly what they should be looking
for.
The aim of this guide is to
clarify what they should cover during a safety inspection and the
checklist assists during this process. It is not intended that
this document be prescriptive and governors should feel free to
adapt it, change it or use only the pages they feel are relevant
for the inspections they normally carry out. Nor is this
checklist exhaustive. It is not possible to give an exhaustive
checklist that fits every school. This is why it is important to
adapt it to fit your school.
Checklists for governors normally
look only at physical items such as torn carpets which can cause
someone to trip up. This checklist has gone further than this as
it prompts the governors to ask questions about the schools
safety management procedures. The information contained in the
document and the checklist will assist governors to carry out a
meaningful safety inspection of the school. This document will
also greatly assist new governors or governors who have
recently taken on the roll of health and safety.
